the classic experience

the northern circuitthe way it should be done

a classic safari is not a beginner's safari — it is the definitive safari. the one you came to africa for. tarangire with its elephant super-herds and ancient baobabs. the ngorongoro crater, still the best single day of wildlife viewing in the world. the serengeti, where the plains roll away to nothing and the sky belongs only to birds and light.

what makes ours different is what happens around the wildlife. we don't fill our vehicles. we don't rush between parks. we choose camps with genuine character — small, owner-run properties that feel different from one another, where the guides know the animals by name and the cooks make something worth talking about at dinner.

the classic northern circuit can be done in six days, but eight or ten lets you breathe. it lets you spend a second morning in tarangire when the herd is still at the riverbed, or stay in ngorongoro for sunset rather than rushing to the next camp. that extra time is where the trip goes from good to unforgettable.

The four great parks of northern Tanzania are the backbone of the classic safari. Each has its own character. Together they deliver a complete east africa wildlife experience.
Best time

june–october is the peak dry season — animals concentrate around water, grass is short, visibility is excellent. january–march is calving season in the southern serengeti with incredible predator action. avoid april–may (the long rains) for a comfortable trip. november–december is a lovely shoulder season with good prices and green landscapes.

An honest note

the classic safari is our most requested style for good reason — it delivers. if this is your first time in africa, start here. if you've done it before and want more depth, tell us: we'll shape a second safari that goes beyond the circuit into the wild places most operators never show.

common questions

things travellersoften ask

Is this right for a first safari?

Absolutely. The classic northern circuit is designed for it — the parks are well-developed, the roads are manageable, and the wildlife density is reliable. Most of our clients have their best wildlife encounters on this exact circuit.

How many days do I need?

Six days is the minimum to do Tarangire, Ngorongoro, and Serengeti properly. Eight days lets you add Lake Manyara and have a more relaxed pace. Ten days is ideal if you want extended time in the Serengeti or to explore remote areas.

What is the difference between midrange and luxury?

Midrange camps (from $350/person/night) are comfortable tented camps with good food, private en-suite bathrooms, and reliable service. Luxury camps (from $700/person/night) add more space, premium finishes, private plunge pools, and a level of service that anticipates your needs. Both styles deliver the classic safari experience.

Will I see the Big Five?

The classic northern circuit gives you excellent Big Five chances. Lions are common in both the Serengeti and Ngorongoro. Leopards are regularly seen in Tarangire and Lake Manyara. Elephants are everywhere. Buffalo are abundant. Black rhino are rare but the Ngorongoro Crater has a healthy population — your best chance in Tanzania.

Can we add Zanzibar to a classic safari?

Yes — and we recommend it. Three to five nights on Zanzibar is a perfect complement to the bush. The pace shift from game drives to beach days is part of the magic of a Tanzania holiday. We design the bush and beach combination regularly.
