Mikumi
National Park

the southern serengeti

mikumi is the south's most accessible secret — open plains that feel a little like the serengeti, easy to reach and rich with life. elephants, lions, zebra and giraffe across the mkata floodplain make it a rewarding short escape, and a beautiful gateway to the wild south.

"The easiest big-game park in Africa. Drive in, and the wildlife finds you."
— Lonely Planet

mikumi is the friendly face of the southern safari. crossed by the tanzam highway that links dar es salaam to zambia, it's one of the most accessible parks in africa — reachable from the capital in a single morning, with wildlife in view from the road itself. the mkata flood plain at its heart so resembles the serengeti's short-grass plains that locals call it the "little serengeti."

the wildlife is genuinely abundant. the plains hold great herds of zebra, wildebeest, eland and impala, alongside healthy numbers of giraffe, elephant and buffalo. lions are reliably found on the mkata floodplain, especially around the hippo pools where game gathers in the dry months. leopards stalk the wooded fringes. the park even holds a healthy population of wild dog — rarely seen, but growing.

"You don't plan a Mikumi safari. You just go. And then you marvel at how much wildlife is there waiting for you, just a few hours from the coast."

what mikumi lacks in the deep wilderness of ruaha or nyerere, it more than makes up for in ease. day trips from dar es salaam are entirely possible. pairing with the selous and ruaha is simple. a few nights here either side of a longer southern safari makes a relaxed, gentle introduction to the bush — perfect for families with young children, first-time travellers, or anyone short on time.

for travellers with a tighter budget or schedule, mikumi delivers a remarkable share of the bigger southern parks' wildlife at a fraction of the cost. it's the southern safari for those who want the bush without the fuss.

the mkata floodplain

a small serengetiin southern tanzania

the mkata flood plain is the heart of mikumi — an open savannah that strongly recalls the serengeti's short-grass plains. this is where most of the park's wildlife gathers.

Mkata Plains

open savannah

vast grassy plains dotted with acacia and baobab — the richest game-viewing in the park. great herds of plains game, with lions, leopards and the occasional cheetah hunting among them.

Hippo Pools

permanent water

a string of permanent hippo pools on the mkata river where game gathers through the dry season. hippos by the dozen, crocodiles patrolling, and predators waiting at the water's edge.

Vuma Hills

acacia woodland

the wooded southern hills hold a different cast — kudu, sable, and the odd elephant herd. the hills themselves make dramatic backdrops, and the sunset photography is stunning.

Ikoya Loop

northern circuit

a wider game-drive circuit through the northern reaches — quieter, with chances of wild dog sightings and rare antelope you won't find on the central plains.

why mikumi

six reasonsit makes sense

mikumi is the park for those who want the most wildlife with the least fuss. here's why we recommend it for first-time travellers, families, and anyone short on time.

No. 01

accessible from dar

4 hours by road from dar es salaam — the only major tanzanian park you can comfortably reach on a day trip from the coast. perfect for pairing safari with zanzibar without juggling flights.

No. 02

wildlife right at the roadside

the tanzam highway runs through the park — and wildlife is genuinely in view from the road itself. giraffes browsing, elephants crossing, zebras grazing beside the cars. the easiest first-safari sightings in africa.

No. 03

excellent value

camps and lodges in mikumi run roughly 40% less than their equivalents in ruaha or the selous, and the park fees are lower too. a gentle-on-the-budget safari with no drop in wildlife.

No. 04

family-friendly wildlife

the open plains make wildlife easy to spot and photograph — ideal for little ones who lose patience with the deep-bush hide-and-seek of ruaha. several lodges are built specially for families.

No. 05

big cats & plains game

lion sightings on the mkata floodplain are reliable all year round. giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, eland and impala are all here in good numbers. the classic plains-game experience.

No. 06

combine with selous/ruaha

mikumi pairs naturally with nyerere/selous (3 hrs) and ruaha (5 hrs). many of our southern itineraries use it as a gentle-on-the-budget first or last stop.

getting there

by airor by road

mikumi is the easiest major tanzanian park to reach by road — 4 hours on good tarmac from dar es salaam. pairing with nyerere/selous and ruaha, by air or road, is straightforward.

by road

the dar drive

from dar es salaam via the morogoro highway — 4 hours, mostly tarmac, with a lunch stop in morogoro. a long drive, but easy and scenic.

by air

light aircraft

charter and a few scheduled flights run from dar es salaam to mikumi airstrip — a 1-hour hop. handy when time is tight, or for pairing with the other southern parks.

combine

southern circuit basics

pair mikumi with nyerere/selous (3 hrs by road, 30 min by air) or ruaha (5 hrs by road, 1 hr by air). or add zanzibar for a bush-and-beach itinerary.

entry fees

tanapa standard

park entry is $30 per adult per day, $10 for children 5–15 — lower than both the northern parks and the more remote southern ones. it's all wrapped into our standard itinerary pricing.

frequently asked

practicalquestions

two years of guiding mikumi means we've answered these questions many times over. if there's something we haven't covered, just ask — we reply to every enquiry within 24 hours.

two to three nights suits most travellers — enough to explore the mkata floodplain properly and see most of the headline wildlife. day trips from dar are possible but rushed. keen safari-goers may prefer four nights or more.
it depends on your time and budget. with both to spare, ruaha is the richer experience. but if you want to pair safari with the coast without overspending, mikumi delivers excellent value and genuinely good wildlife.
yes — we run these regularly. a 5am pickup, a 4-hour drive, a full day of game drives, dinner at the park, and back around 11pm. a long day, but a wonderful way to fold a safari into a beach holiday.
the tanzam highway through the park is a genuine downside — trucks do hit wildlife, and the noise carries into the bush. but it's also a quirk in your favour: many of your sightings will be right along the highway itself.
lions, yes (reliably). buffalo, yes. elephants, yes. leopards, possible but harder. rhinos, no — none in southern tanzania since the 1980s. the plains-game viewing is excellent.
yes — wonderful for families. the open plains make wildlife easy to spot, the lodges look after children well, and being so reachable from dar keeps it manageable. we shape every family itinerary around the ages travelling.
