The safari on
your own two feet

where it becomes real

leave the vehicle behind and the bush comes alive in a way no game drive can match — the tracks, the scents, the small wonders you'd otherwise pass by. led by expert armed guides, our walks are gentle, safe, and quietly thrilling. the wild, on foot and on its own terms.

a differentkind of presence

step out of the vehicle and into the bush, and the whole safari changes. sound returns. smell returns. scale returns. from inside a land cruiser, an elephant 30 metres away is a photographic subject; on foot, it's an enormous, very alive presence whose decisions about you are entirely its own. the same animals you've watched all week become — rightly — much bigger, much more real, much more interesting.

walking safaris aren't a stunt. they're a deliberate, carefully run activity led by qualified armed scouts (tanzania national parks rangers, alongside your own walking guide). routes are chosen for safety and interest, and the pace is slow. the question isn't "how far can we walk" but "how much can we notice in this small patch" — tracks, dung, plants, birds, insects, the small things that make up the real texture of the bush. by your second walking morning, you understand why some travellers think walking is the only real safari.

tanzania's best walking parks are on the southern circuit — nyerere/selous, ruaha — where the activity is licensed, the parks are vast, and the wildlife is plentiful. multi-day walks are possible in the private wilderness areas of the selous, walking between mobile camps over several days with only a daypack. we also arrange half-day and full-day walks in the northern parks where the licensing allows.

the dimensions

what makes thisexperience itself

01

multi-day selouswalking expedition

2-4 days walking between mobile camps in Selous. You walk 4-8 km per day with light packs. Cooks and porters move ahead. Each night a new camp pitched in a different setting. The closest thing to true exploration.
02

half-day walksall parks

2-3 hour morning walks available at many properties — Ngorongoro Highlands, Tarangire conservancies, Manyara Ranch, Loliondo. A taste of walking safari combined with standard game drive itinerary.
03

night walksprivate concessions

After-dark walks in select private concessions reveal nocturnal mammals not seen on day drives — bushbabies, civets, hyenas, sometimes leopard. Restricted to private land (national parks prohibit night walks).
04

walking-focused safaris5+ days walking

Itineraries built around 50/50 walking and driving. Often combined with the southern circuit for the longest walking sessions and best wilderness experience.
Best time

walking is best in the dry season (june–october and january–february), when the bush is thinner, visibility is better, and conditions are more settled. we avoid walking through the long rains (april–may). cooler highland walks are possible year-round.

common questions

things travellersoften ask

Walking safaris in Tanzania have an excellent safety record going back decades. Armed scouts (national park rangers) lead every walk. They are trained, equipped, and have authority to prevent any dangerous interactions. Your role is to follow instructions exactly. There is risk — but managed risk.
Your scout reads the bush continuously and avoids dangerous encounters by route choice and timing. When an unavoidable encounter occurs, protocol is: stop, do not run, follow the scout's hand signals exactly. Walking groups have backed away from elephant and lion encounters thousands of times without incident.
Reasonable fitness — able to walk 6-10 km in 2-3 hours at slow pace, on uneven ground, in heat (25-30°C). You are not racing. Stops are frequent. People in their 60s and 70s walk regularly. Most fit teenagers handle it fine.
Minimum age is 12 in most parks (sometimes 15 for multi-day walks). Walking safaris are not suitable for younger children — pace, attention spans, and risk management all argue against it. Plan game drives for families with younger kids.
Bring lightweight gear — one body, one mid-range zoom (28-200 or 24-105). Long lenses are heavy and unwieldy on foot. Many of the best walking-safari images are environmental, not telephoto. A small daypack carries water, camera, sunscreen, hat.
