a safari is the rare holiday that thrills a six-year-old and a sixty-year-old in the same breath. we plan around real families — flexible days, patient guides who love teaching children, comfortable camps with room to breathe, and the kind of shared wonder you'll all still be talking about years from now. grand without being fussy, comfortable without being plain.
most people assume a safari is no place for children. they're wrong. tanzania is one of the easiest african countries to travel with kids — no malaria in many highland areas, lodges with family suites and a pool, junior ranger programmes at most properties, and wildlife that genuinely holds a child's attention. our youngest traveller was 4 (and remains one of our happiest); our oldest was 91. both had the trip of their lives.
the key is building the safari around the family. pace matters more than the number of stops. the right vehicle matters more than the camp's luxury. junior ranger activities, a pool in the mid-afternoon, child-friendly meals, and lodges that truly welcome kids (rather than merely tolerate them) are the difference between a happy family trip and an exhausting one.
for multi-generational trips (grandparents, parents, children), we usually build longer itineraries with more rest days, weave in cultural visits the kids will remember, and finish with beach time on zanzibar. the right pace, the right lodges, the right vehicles — and a guide who knows how to draw children in — turn a family safari into the trip that gets retold at the dinner table for decades.

school holidays (july–august, christmas) are the most popular and the most expensive. quieter alternatives: february half-term (calving season is wonderful for older children), and the easter holidays (lush and green, good value, with some rain).
most lodges take children from age 6; some luxury camps from 8 or 12. walking safaris and primate tracking carry age limits (often 12+). we match the accommodation to your particular party.
