The beach
that hides nothing

white sand, no tides

on zanzibar's northern tip, nungwi and kendwa are where the beaches are at their most postcard-perfect — soft sand, swimmable water at every tide, and sunsets that stop conversation. it's the ideal place to do beautifully little after a safari, in comfort and style.

zanzibar's postcard

where the indian oceanstays swimmable all day

if you've seen a photograph of a "zanzibar beach" in a brochure, it was almost certainly taken at nungwi or kendwa. these two small fishing villages on the northern tip of unguja face the open indian ocean and — crucially — sit on a stretch of coast where the tide barely moves. the swimming is good all day, every day, whatever the tide.

that matters, because most of zanzibar's east coast beaches (paje, jambiani, matemwe) have dramatic tides — at low tide the ocean pulls back hundreds of metres and swimming becomes impossible. nungwi and kendwa don't have that problem. the sea is always there, always warm, always clear.

the trade-off is that nungwi is the island's most developed beach. eighty-plus resorts and hotels line the coast. the feel is lively and international — beach bars, dhow trips, dolphin tours, scuba diving, kitesurfing. if you want classic tropical resort life with everything on tap, this is the place. if you're after solitude or local culture, quieter kendwa to the south, or the east coast beaches, suit better.

what to do

six experiences,six different days

01

snorkelling at mnemba atoll

a protected marine reserve a short boat ride away. reefs in pristine condition, dolphins often about, sea turtles common. the best snorkelling in zanzibar.

Tip from our team Go in the morning when water is calmest and visibility highest. Half-day trips from $50.
02

sunset dhow cruise

a traditional wooden dhow sets out at 16:30, sailing the coast for 1.5–2 hours and returning at sunset. the northern coast catches the sun head-on — spectacular colours.

Tip from our team Bring something warm — it gets surprisingly cool on the water as the sun goes down.
03

kendwa rocks full moon party

once a month at the famous kendwa rocks beach bar — zanzibar's best-known night out. live music, dancing, fire shows, an international crowd.

Tip from our team Check dates before booking. Not for everyone — Kendwa is generally quieter outside party nights.
04

scuba diving

several padi-certified dive operators are based in nungwi and kendwa. excellent visibility (20–30m), warm water (26–28°C), reef and wreck dives, the occasional whale shark or manta ray.

Tip from our team Best diving October-March. Get certified in Zanzibar — PADI Open Water from $400.
05

dolphin tour at kizimkazi

a 1.5-hour drive south for the morning departure. wild bottlenose and humpback dolphins are seen regularly, with snorkelling alongside them in deeper water.

Tip from our team Only swim with dolphins if comfortable in open ocean — water is 30m+ deep. Or simply watch from the boat.
06

beach walks & fishing village

nungwi's original fishing village still works every day. dhows are still built here by hand at the legendary nungwi boatyard. walking the beach south to kendwa (2–3 hours) makes a beautiful day.

Tip from our team Walk early or late — midday sand is hot. Bring water and respect fishermen at work.

best time to visit

the seasonsthat matter

nungwi has the longest good-weather window of any zanzibar beach — july–march is broadly excellent. avoid april–may (the long rains), and keep an eye on the calendar if you visit in november, during the kaskazi monsoon shift.

Jun-Oct Excellent Dry, breezy, warm — peak season
Dec-Mar Excellent Hot, clear, lively — also peak
Nov Good Short rains start, some afternoon storms
Apr-May Avoid Long rains, many places close
practical matters

the thingsyou actually need to know

Getting there

how to arrive

nungwi is 45–60 minutes north of stone town and the airport by car ($35–50 by taxi). every resort will arrange transfers. the road is good and well-signposted.

Food & dining

what to eat

most resorts offer full board. outside the resort grounds, nungwi village has dozens of casual seafood spots — cholo's beach bar, mwambao for grilled lobster, ardor bistro for something smarter. kendwa rocks for the famous beach barbecue.

Local customs

etiquette

on hotel beaches, swimwear is fine. heading into the village or away from the resorts, please cover up (shorts and t-shirt over swimwear). tipping: 10% in restaurants if there's no service charge; $2–5 a night for housekeeping.

common questions

things travellersoften ask

Four to five nights is ideal — enough for two days of snorkelling/diving, a sunset dhow, a rest day, and the rhythm of beach life. Three is acceptable; seven becomes monotonous unless you really want to switch off.
Nungwi has more activity, more nightlife, more dining options. Kendwa is 2 km south, slightly quieter, often considered more beautiful. Many travellers stay at Kendwa and visit Nungwi for activities and dining. Both have the same year-round swimming.
Yes — the bay is shallow, sandy-bottomed, and calm at most beaches. Kendwa in particular is excellent for families. Check with your resort about local conditions on the day; rip currents are very rare but possible.
The Nungwi Natural Aquarium is a sea turtle conservation pool. It is controversial — many travellers find it sad. We do not recommend it as ethical wildlife tourism. Visit the Aldabra Tortoise Reserve at Prison Island instead.
Common combinations: Stone Town (2 nights) + Nungwi (4 nights). Or Nungwi (3 nights) + Paje on the east coast (3 nights) for the kitesurfer vibe. The drive between is 90 minutes.
