Where the wind
meets the reef

kitesurfers' paradise

the southeast coast is zanzibar at its most laid-back — long quiet beaches, swaying palms, and a gentle, barefoot rhythm. paje draws the kitesurfers; jambiani keeps its sleepy village charm. both are perfect for travellers who want the island slow, real and unhurried.

the east coast

a different rhythm,a different kind of beach

paje and jambiani sit on zanzibar's long, exposed east coast — facing the open indian ocean and the trade winds that blow reliably through the kite seasons. paje is the island's undisputed kitesurfing capital: world-class operators, beginner-friendly lagoons sheltered by a reef 1 km offshore, and a young, international beach scene.

jambiani, just to the south, is the quieter, more traditional choice — a long swahili village strung along ten kilometres of beach. boutique guesthouses sit beside fishermen's homes, women gather seaweed at low tide for export, and the places to stay are smaller, more design-led, and noticeably gentler on the wallet than the north coast.

the east coast has dramatic tides: at low tide the sea pulls back hundreds of metres beyond the reef, exposing sand flats where seaweed farmers work and you can collect shells. at high tide it returns to within metres of the beach. that rhythm is the east coast's character — not better or worse than the north, just very different. plan your day around the tides, and you'll love it.

common questions

things travellersoften ask

Paje is busier, younger, more kitesurfing and beach-bar vibe. Jambiani is quieter, more local, better for travellers seeking traditional village atmosphere. They are 10 minutes apart by car; you can easily visit both. Many travellers stay Jambiani for quiet nights and visit Paje for activities.
Not a problem — a characteristic. At low tide, the sea retreats but you can walk on white sand and explore tidepools. At high tide, swimming is excellent. Spring tides (around full and new moon) have the biggest variation; neap tides (quarter moons) less. Each guesthouse posts daily tide times.
Yes — the lagoon at Paje is the best beginner spot in the world. A typical learn-to-kite course is 9-12 hours over 3-4 days. By the end of a week, most people can ride. Schools rent gear by the hour or day after certification.
East coast is fine for families but the tide is a factor. Choose a resort with a swimming pool for the low-tide hours. Jambiani is more family-friendly than Paje (less party vibe). Kitesurfing schools take students from age 8+.
Most travellers do Stone Town (2 nights) + Paje/Jambiani (5 nights). Returning safari-goers often add a side trip from Paje to swim with whale sharks in Mafia Island October-March.
