no country on earth packs more wilderness into its borders than tanzania. from the volcanic highlands of the north to the great miombo woodlands of the south, from the chimpanzee forests of the western lakeshore to the elephant floodplains of the central reserves — more than a fifth of the country is given over to wildlife, and the result is an archipelago of national parks unlike anything else in africa.

we've grouped tanzania's eleven safari destinations into three circuits — northern, southern and western — each with its own character, its own pace, its own cast. the northern circuit is the classic: serengeti, ngorongoro, tarangire — the parks that defined the african safari. the southern circuit is wilder, quieter, and far gentler on the budget. the western circuit is the least visited and the most extraordinary — africa's greatest chimpanzees, its second-deepest lake, its most untouched savannah.
